OBTAINING OUR INHERITANCE

We are all called by God to obtain our inheritance – both in the natural and in the spiritual. It is very important for us to obtain the inheritance of God so we need to really prepare for it. God’s promises are secure.

The first principle in obtaining our inheritance is that we need to believe that God’s promises are secure.

The Word of God is faithful and true. Psalm 119:89-91 says that His Word stands firm in heaven. His faithfulness extends to every generation and His regulations remain true to this day. The Lord’s desire is to fulfill every detail of His plans and promises in our lives and the lives of the generations to come. Sometimes we forget what God has promised to us so we need to be very careful in guarding His promises in our hearts. Yet even when we forget, the One who made the promise does not forget.

One thing that we need to remember is that the fulfillment of the promises of God requires waiting. During the time of Moses, the Israelites waited for 400 years before God fulfilled His promises to them. God is the owner of time, He is the One who decrees everything. All we need to do is to submit and yield to His timeline. No matter how long we have to wait, we need to be assured that God’s promises will surely come because His Word and His promises are faithful and true.

In Genesis 40 and 41, we read about how Joseph had to wait. When he was in the prison cell, he interpreted the dreams of the Pharaoh’s cupbearer and chief baker. He said that the cupbearer will be restored to his position as the Pharaoh’s cupbearer but the chief baker will be executed.

Joseph asked the cupbearer to tell Pharaoh about him hoping he might let him out of the prison cell. Three days later, everything happened just as Joseph interpreted the dreams of the cupbearer and chief baker. However, the Pharaoh’s chief cupbearer forgot all about Joseph. Joseph stayed in the prison cell for two full years until the cupbearer remembered him when Pharaoh asked someone to interpret his own dream.

It was the Lord who caused the cupbearer to forget his promise to Joseph because the Lord wants to develop that trust and faith in the heart of Joseph, particularly the precious attitude of waiting upon God. Sometimes people whom we trust to help us may forget about us but God will never forget us and He has His own way of fulfilling His promises in our lives.

His way is always perfect and His timing is precise. Isaiah 55:10-13 tells us that God will surely fulfill His Word and plans in our lives. We need to trust Him fully and discern His timing in our lives.

God requires faithfulness and humility in our lives.

God allows us to be in the period of waiting before we will see the fulfillment of His promises in our lives. In this period of waiting, God will require us to be humble and faithful. He requires us to be faithful in serving Him and yielding ourselves before Him. 2 Samuel 22:26 says “To the faithful you show yourself faithful; to those with integrity you show integrity.”

Twofold Inheritance:

Geographical Inheritance

In Genesis 13:14-16, the Lord gave Abram and his descendants their geographical inheritance. God has also ordained specific places for us as our inheritance. Only in the place of God’s choosing can we grow to the fullest extent. He will provide the right people who will help us with our needs. He will provide us with people who will help us grow in our spiritual walk with Him. No matter how uncomfortable that place is, we still feel at peace and we find ourselves drawing closer and closer to God.

Spiritual Inheritance

In Genesis 22:17, the Lord said to Abraham “I will certainly bless you. I will multiply your descendants beyond number, like the stars in the sky and the sand on the seashore. Your descendants will conquer the cities of their enemies.”

The Lord also wants to bless us with our spiritual inheritance through our spiritual children. He wants us not only to bring people to Him but to raise up our own spiritual Timothys as well. In 1 Timothy 1:2, Paul became a spiritual father to Timothy. God also wants us to become fathers and mothers in the faith just like Paul so we can bring our spiritual children to the high calling of God in their lives.

Let’s not just disciple them but nurture and treat them like our own children. Second Timothy 2:2 teaches us to raise up Timothys who will also impart the same message and vision in the lives of others.

Our inheritance also comes through our own children. They are a gift and reward from the Lord (Psalm 127:3). In Genesis 15:4, the Lord said to Abraham “No, your servant will not be your heir, for you will have a son of your own who will be your heir.” Our children are our heir and inheritance from the Lord so we should be the one teaching and training them to walk in the ways of the Lord.

Proverbs 22:6 says to train up our children in the way they should go so that when they are old they will not depart from it. Our children should learn from us and not from other people. We should be the one leading and establishing them to the call of God in their lives.

In 1 Kings 1:11-53, we read how Solomon almost lost his calling of becoming the next king when Adonijah, his brother, made himself king without the knowledge of their father, David. Prophet Nathan informed Bathsheba about the plan of Adonijah and advised her to tell King David about it.

Bathsheba knew that Solomon was destined to be the heir of King David so she did not allow Adonijah to take Solomon’s place. Bathsheba heeded Nathan’s counsel so the kingship was given to her son, Solomon.

As parents, we also need to have that sense of urgency in leading our children to their respective callings and not allow others to take that place from us. If we will be reluctant in bringing our children to their respective callings, the influence of this world will take our place and lead them away from God.

Psalm 127:3-5 tells us that our children are our heritage and reward from the Lord. They also serve as arrows with a respective purpose so it is our responsibility to raise them up as polished arrows that will hit the mark of their calling. It is God who ordains their calling (Jeremiah 1:5) and it is our duty to help them fulfill it.

May it be an encouragement to us that to obtain our inheritance from the Lord, we need to embrace His Word and hold on to His promises as they are always faithful and true.
