THE GOOD EYE AND THE BAD EYE, Part 2
Continued from THIS ARTICLE...
2. THE BAD EYE
Leviticus 21:18-20 talks about some characteristic physical defects that prohibit one from coming before the Lord. While they all have their own spiritual significance, we would like to focus on those that are associated with the eye. One defect is blindness, which is essentially the lack of vision. We have to see where we are now and where we are going! We need to walk in the present truth of God and lead other people as well to the pathway of light. Another defect is a “blemish in the eye” which signifies diminished sight, or blind spots in our vision. We tend to interpret truth based on the lenses that we use to see that truth. (Such as the proponents of Christian homosexuality or remarriage that twist Scripture to validate and “legitimize” their carnal desires!). So often, we think that we are able to see the whole picture when in fact, we often need to pray for the Lord to show us the situation as He sees it.
An evil eye views everything with suspicion, contempt, and unbelief. The ten spies spoken of in Numbers 13-14 were children of light, but they had an ungodly testimony. God showed them a land flowing with milk and honey, but they saw barriers, giants, and obstacles. They allowed their blemished eye to cloud their vision, and affected thousands more with discouraging thoughts. They were not able to make it in the promise land because of the evil heart of unbelief!
Jesus then tells us if one’s eye is good, the whole body will be full of light. And contrariwise, if one’s eye is bad, the whole body will be full of darkness. The whole is affected much by such a small part! It’s an all-or-nothing kind of thing. It’s either we are full of light, or full of darkness depending on what eyes we have. What we expose ourselves to affects our vision tremendously. If we are soaking ourselves with worldly things (ungodly books, TV, movies, social media, or the internet, etc), we will be filled with worldliness and begin to imbibe the world’s attributes. We cannot achieve the state where we can say that we can not be affected by the things we see no matter where we are in the spectrum of Christian maturity. There are evil spirits that can see an open door in our lives if we continue to soak upon these things, and they can influence us in the way we see things. They can even lead us to unsound doctrine and have us thinking that we are hearing from God!
There was a man who, during his childhood, was raised as an Anglican Christian. But when he was thirteen years old, he laid his eyes on the work of Charles Darwin and this caused him to leave the Christian faith and support atheism. Now, he is a staunch opponent of Christianity and morality. He has influenced many to atheism with his books being published by the millions, and even going around the UK with atheist buses spreading his ungodly advocacy. His depraved mind has caused him to live a life of immorality, and even advocate the abortion of unborn babies with Down’s syndrome (He calls it “immoral” to let such live). All of these started with just one look at an evil book.
The opposite is also true : if we set our eyes on the Scriptures and godly books, we will begin to have light, a clear mind, and a heart that is ready to listen to what God is saying. We will become more like Christ, and we will separate ourselves from this world and unto God. This is true holiness. We need the blood of Jesus to wash off the filthiness in our eyes. We need to see as God sees. By the grace of God, may we be granted “good eyes” that we may be filled with His light!
